DI-Why Not #8: Flower Corsage Tank Top (Part 1)

Last Friday, faced with dire warnings of a blizzard and being snowed in for a few days, I decided it would be a great time to get everything I needed for the flower corsage tank top from The Sweetest Occasion. Everyone in the area was in a panic, with lines out the door for $30 shovels (criminal, no?) and people fighting over bread and milk. It was anarchy!

After almost losing my life over a parking spot, I rolled into Bruce Variety in Bethesda, adjacent to a hardware store like there was no weather induced crisis going on and intent on getting almost everything I needed.  Details on how to make the flower corsage tank (pointed out to me by my girl Juli) on The Sweetest Occasion were actually on another blog, Such Pretty Things.

So.

Supplies (via Such Pretty Things) needed were:

*scraps of fabric in a variety of textures (velvet, organza, tulle, satin)

*sew-on velcro (not the sticky kind!)

*rhinestones or other embellishment

*needle and thread (in coordinating shade)

*scissors

*marking pencil

Fabric.  Thanks to my pom pom lantern magical mystery tour, I had scraps in my apartment.  However, what kind of DIY investigative reporter would I be if didn't get all the supplies fresh?

At Bruce Variety, the woman at the fabric counter was very cool. I could have hung out with her all day. She had that husky vodka and cigarettes voice and no nonsense attitude toward the snow madness around her that reminded me of my New England friends' parents from my days at UMass.

After explaining what I needed, she showed me the tulle options, laughing when I asked her for satin or velvet as suggested by Such Pretty Things.  However, they did have a colorful selection of cotton.  Eh. Who needs satin or velvet?  Plus, I still had the fabric at home (I know, I know, but the winter weather panic was staring to fray my nerves) and needed to hit Target for the tank. I picked up a 1/4 yard of tulle ($1.75), cotton ($1.75), sequins ($1.19), rhinestones ($1.99), and velcro ($0.69).

I had to fight my way back to to my Mini, dodging cars like Frogger. I won't even go into the shenanigans that went on to get out of the lot, and the snow hadn't even started!

On to Target for a tank top.

Surprisingly, both the lot and the store itself were drama free.  I sailed without problem to active wear after a minor detour at the Rodarte for Target display.

Slim pickings. Apparently, tank tops are a much needed item during a snowstorm.

I chose aqua and scrammed, determined to get home and cozy as soon as possible.
