****Check out DIY Pom Pom Wreath Part II*****
I did it. I made the DIY pom pom wreath from
Bleubird Vintage. I was so scared.
It involved a glue gun and lots of steps.
It took me for-ever.
The list of what was needed was not too bad:
- 3-5 different colors of yarn
- glue gun (can't believe I now own one)
- fabric
- straw wreath
- deer ornament (or some such)
- scissors
I had to go to four different stores. Michaels, AC Moore, World Market, and CVS. Not my favorite way to spend a morning, but
I am nothing if not committed.
First stop was AC Moore, where they had the yarn and glue gun ($19.54). There seemed to be a run on circular straw wreaths since only heart-shaped ones were left. For me, that would put the cutesy factor way over the edge, so though I was tempted by convenience,
I drove out to Michaels in search of a round wreath.
Michaels had wreaths galore, however there were no clues from Bleubird Vintage's directions on what size to get. There was an 18", a 12", and a 6". Clueless, I stood there awhile, staring, until I started to sneeze. The straw maybe? On a wild guess, based on the picture from
Bleubird, the 12" won ($3.99).
Totally unrelated, remember these? I saw them at Michaels...I used to love the horse and puppy kits. My mom would give them to me to work on in the car on the way to visit my grandparents in Philly.
On to my fabric and ornament scavenger hunt. I searched far and wide, no felt or fabric to be found. I even attempted to solicit help to no avail.
Finally, in the paper aisle, inspiration struck. Gauze! As in "I hurt myself and need a bandage." CVS to the rescue! No ornaments struck my fancy at Michaels, but it was a good day for epiphanies - World Market has cute stuff and is around the corner from the CVS.
I picked up a 3" wide gauze roll at the CVS ($2.99) and continued on to World Market, where Frosty the Snowman ($2.00) called out to me. He looked like he wanted to hang out on a pom pom wreath, so home we went.
At home, I rechecked the
Bleubird Vintage site to print out the pom pom directions and was linked to another
site to learn how to make them.
Looked like it was gonna take awhile.
So I put down my yarn and ignored it for awhile, totally disregarding my friend Juli's advice to start right away. It was only Thursday, after all!
Fast forward to Saturday night.
Mr. Foxy, horrified that I had not yet seen "The Godfather," ordered a variety of dumplings from China Bistro and loaded the movie while I whipped out my yarn and tutorial, determined to multi-task.
After a couple of false starts, it turns out to be not so bad!
(FYI: don't tie the pom pom with the piece of string through the hole where your fingers were, but instead around the whole thing in the middle.)
I like how, pre-haircut, they look like soot sprites from Miziyaki's "Spirited Away":
I made it thru the first 10 before my fingers started to hurt. Then I became
bored and a bit disheartened by the seemingly Sisyphean task of making 41 pom poms as per Bleubird's suggestion.
It took me the entirety of "The Godfather" (3 hours - leave the gun, take the cannoli) and 1.5 hours of Mr. Foxy playing Grand Theft Auto for me to have all 41 yarn poofs made and trimmed.
Not without injury, however. I sliced my finger making the silly things.
I was faced with having to
trim the yarn in each poof so that they looked less "shaggy." OK.
The poms pictured are the coiffed ones.
By then, it was late, my pom poms were not as endearing as they were when I first started, and my new name was Cranky McCrankerson, so I decided to finish everything up on Sunday.
Since this
took me two days, I thought I would break it up into two posts...more tomorrow!
