DI-Why Not #5: Pom Pom Wreath (Part 2)

Continued from yesterday's Pom Pom Wreath DIY Part I

Sunday morning, we woke up bright and early.

I had to be at my friend's shower at 2:30 and was on a mission to complete my pom pom wreath before I left.

First up, the directions said to wrap the wreath in fabric.  During my hunt for components I couldn't find any that was in a long strip already so I scored first aid gauze. Same thing, as far I was concerned, and way easier than cutting a piece of fabric I definitely didn't have lying around.

Wreath Ingredients

Unfortunately, the directions from Bleubird Vintage didn't say how much fabric was needed, and I ran out.

Not Enough Gauze!

On the upside, I got to fire up the glue gun, which was fun. I couldn't be bothered to cover the rest of the wreath. I was over this project already and had to get to a baby shower!

Reminding myself to stay on task, I moved on to attaching pom poms. I was hoping the glue gun would be needed, but no such luck. I must tie the pom poms to the wreath. One. at. a. time.

Then I ran out of pom poms. Turned out 41 wasn't enough.  Either Bleubird got it wrong, or the wreath I chose was too big.  So bitter. I had to make more pom poms.

So I did. I made 10 more. Success!

With all the poms attached and strings from the back of the wreath cut off, it was time for Frosty and the glue gun to join the party.

2.5 hours later, I was done!

Finally.

All in all, my wreath turned out pretty cute. It took me 7 hours to make, and at least 2 hours to round up all the ingredients.

In total, it cost $28.52 and 9 hours of my time.  I used to argue with the cable guy when he would keep me waiting outside of the promised window of time that he owed me the equivalent amount of my wages, arriving at that number by using my salary's hourly rate. It never failed to get me a few free months of service.  Using that same formula, this was one hella expensive wreath.

So, was it worth it? Possibly, if you: a) have all the gear lying around; b) love to do crafty things; or c) have a pom pom fixation.

I don't mean to be such a Debbie Downer, or a DIY hater, 'cause I'm not.  All I'm saying is, as cute as some of this stuff seems, I'm not quite sure it always makes sense.  It seems DIY is often positioned as a great way to save yourself money and add a personal touch to your wedding, house, or gift giving. So far, I am learning these projects take more skill and/or time that do not make them 100% worth it. I do have a glue gun now, though, so I will continue my DIY odyssey.

Next up, I am not sure! I am going to be in LA for the next two weeks, and will have access to all my artist sister's tools and artist-y ideas. I will consult with her and post my 6th DI-Why Not challenge soon. That is, of course, unless you have any requests! Feel free to chime in and make demands.

PS I made it to the shower on time..for once in my life.
